Chaacha Mwita resigns as Standard Group CEO

By Metro News Reporter

Standard Group PLC chief executive Chaacha Mwita has resigned, with his departure set to take effect on November 1, 2026, seven months after his appointment to the role on a substantive basis.

Mwita took over as acting CEO in July 2025 after Marion Gathoga-Mwangi left the position. The board has not given a reason for his resignation or announced a successor.

His exit comes as the media group faces financial and regulatory challenges. In February, it suspended a proposed KSh1.5 billion rights issue, citing market conditions and a review of its financing options.

The company has also been in a dispute with the Communications Authority over KSh48.87 million in regulatory fees and levies. Standard Group has separately said the government owes it more than KSh1.2 billion in unpaid advertising bills.

Mwita previously served as the group’s Chief Executive Editor and Editorial Director. He was appointed substantive CEO effective April 1, 2026, after serving as acting CEO from July 2025.
